Obesity is watching you

Obesity! A disease in disguise! Obesity is a disease, not considered deadly. There are no symptoms that really cause hindrance to your daily lifestyle. You gradually move to obese state from being fat and still doesn’t hamper your daily lifestyle much. But the ultimate outcome is more dangerous than you could think!

What happens once you are obese or overweight?

Obesity increases chances of  you developing Joint pains, Heart disease and stroke, High blood pressure, Diabetes, Some cancers, Gallbladder disease and gallstones, Osteoarthritis, Gout, Breathing problems, such as sleep apnea (when a person stops breathing for short episodes during sleep) and Asthma. In fact these are the diseases which don’t show much of outer symptoms. Once it spreads internally, you start reacting to it.
At BMI >30 risk of getting diabetes increases by 25 times in women & 7 times in men. As per study done by National Diabetes, Obesity and Cholesterol Foundation; in 2011 there were 35 million diabetics in India & by 2030 this number will increase to 79.4 million.
Risk of heart attack increases by 23% with each 5 unit increase in BMI. The absolute death rate due to heart disease shall increase in India from 1.6 million/y in the year 2000 to 2 million in 2010 and 2.6 million by the year 2020, an increase by 61%.
Globally obesity is a big problem accounting to a total of 34 million people. Whereas US tops the chart with 19 million obese people, shockingly India and China together accounts to 15 million obese people.

Obesity-India

“India is the 3rd largest OBESE country”

A study published in the noted medical journal Lancet says India is just behind US and China in this global hazard list of top 10 countries with highest number of obese people. Nearly 35% of the general population and 1/4th of the adolescents have syndrome X consisting of obesity, high BP, Insulin resistance, increased cholesterol, which predates diabetes and heart disease.
It also shows that the obesity has grown rapidly from 16% to 29% in last five years. India has reached the most epidemic stage in obesity in 21st centuries.

“Being fat takes the fun out of being a Kid”…..

More than 15 million children are estimated to be overweight in urban India. Often parents fail to understand there’s a difference between healthy fat and growing obese. During childhood your kid’s diet is in your hands. One must make a healthy eating habit for kids or teenagers. Lifestyle disorder is forcing more and more young people to gain excess body weight. Junk foods are one of the primary reason why children are growing obesity followed by lack of exercise. In this digital era hardly there are children who enjoys or are aware of outdoor games. Even foods with high level of preservatives, calorie, and trans-fats are claimed to be healthy in the advertisements. We really need to understand that what we practice now, brings the result after 3 years.

How do you understand whether you have healthy fat or, you are obese?

This is a common question amongst people. You need to check your BMI or Body Mass Index to know if you are obese. A certain age has a certain limit. The chart is available online or you may also check at Define Aesthetics Facebook page for detailed information. But it’s always better to take prevention than suffering from it. Parents worry that the time invested in physical activity comes at the expense of academic achievement. This is not the case as to achieve academic heights one need to have a healthy body.

The Vicious Cycle Of Childhood Obesity

Child obesity cycle (1lb= 0.45Kg)

Adult Obesity

There is a considerable amount of adults who suffer from obesity as well. While for a child it’s easier to lose weight gradually over a period of time it’s quite difficult of adults to shed off those extra kilos easily. With age the fat becomes more stubborn. Study says there are patients who might have cured for obesity related diseases but failed to lose weight. There remains the chances of re-occurrence of the diseases.

For adults obesity also kills it from outside. Apart from the looks, it also makes you lethargic and makes you tiring at every little step.

You think you can live with it!

Often we see people resist to lose weight and get in shape. One of the major conceptual barrier is age. People especially who have gained weight after having children think “let it be. Let this go as it is”. It’s just lack of motivation and we at Define Aesthetics always preach –

“There’s no age to lose weight. Rather if you lose weight you lose age”

We even have amazing client stories who are above 50 years and visited Define Aesthetics clinic to redefine themselves. You may let it go as it is but you still have a chance to turn your life in to a better one…. You still have a chance to find a new you. Don’t wait for the obesity to grow in to dangerous diseases. Start taking care from today itself.

Let’s take a look at the India stats:

While Punjab tops the obesity chart, Maharashtra ranked 9. In Maharashtra 16% males are obese. More shockingly, women have a statistics of 18% all together.

Is surgery the only solution?

NO! Complicated weight loss surgeries aren’t the only solution. While we describe the other methods later in the blog, first we need to understand the concept of weight loss solutions.

Many take ‘gym and exercise’ as the easiest and safest method to lose weight.

Hold on. It’s not! Hitting a gym has many benefits including weight loss but that also comes at an expense. Not every kind of obese conditions are recommended to exercise. A proper medical guidance is extremely necessary to avoid side effects. Sweating not always let you lose the weight from desired places. Have you ever considered the number of months you need to go to the gym daily? Yes it does bring considerable result but takes longer than you could think. The amount of time one needs to invest in gym again takes half of the day due to post exercise fatigue. Every health condition is not advisable for gym. Often patients with obesity has knee pain, spondylitis, joint pains etc. In these cases gym is a strict NO!

Next is complicated surgeries:

There’s a mushroom growth of hospitals or private clinics that practice weight loss surgeries. Often the customer get confused whether to go under the knife or not. This is also a prime reason that obese people shy away from losing weight as they think surgery is the ultimate solution.

Coming to the pros and cons of weight loss surgeries, we must say this is not the easiest solution to your problem. There are a number of health risks attached to surgeries including the common ones like hair loss, gallstones, indigestion, intolerance to certain foods, nausea, vomiting, kidney stones, change in bowel habits, difficulty in swallowing, dental problems, dehydration, dumping syndrome etc. Certainly when you research for weight loss solutions things look rosy. But there are risks attached to surgeries.
